just because of all of this, hoboken police department has actually beefed up their traffic patrols by 20 additional officers just for this morning's commute. they're going to be guiding cars through the damage caused by this water main break. as you mentioned, it's been quite a wet weekend. not just in hoboken but on the border of jersey city as well, particularly the newport neighborhood. the water pressure has been restored to many portions of the area, but some high rises are still going to be experiencing lower than normal pressure this morning. officials are telling us that a 16-inch water main break that brings water to both hoboken and the newport area of jersey city was ruptured. boil water advisories were put into effect and remain in effect in hoboken today. they're dealing with a major blow, however, to local businesses who also dealt with flooding. >> the water was almost up to the restaurant. we missed out on a huge brunch

this morning, which is devastating. >> reporter: let's get you briefed on many of the street closures. observer highway is closed west of henderson to jersey avenue. harrison street is closed from pa pat paterson to newark. it's unclear when they will be reopened. drivers are being urged to come in through the north end of hoboken if possible, but i have to tell you, already we see a lot of cars trying to get through this roadblock where we are. it's not happening so far. back to you. >> all right, tracie. thank you very much for the warning there. right now the nypd has a mug shot they want you to see. they identified a man they say is attacking seniors. katherine creag is in the melrose section of the bronx. what's the latest, kat? >> reporter: darlene, you mentioned seniors, also one elderly woman. all of the victims women. why is this man preying on them? we want to show you his picture. police released it just hours ago. his name is gilrael ruperto.

these attacks and robberies began a few weeks ago. in one instance, he threw a liquid on a 72-year-old woman's face. he stole her purse. that woman talked with our sister station telemundo. she says she was injured by whatever was thrown at her face, and she went to the hospital. she was also thrown to the ground during the robbery, according to investigators. the suspect's name is gilrael ruperto. he's about five feet tall, 125 pounds. as we mentioned, his criminal past, darlene. we've also learned ruperto was arrested a year ago this time for another theft. back to you. >> all right. katherine creag, thank you so much. an elderly man in norwalk, connecticut, says he was scammed by burglars posing as water company workers. police say one of the thieves told the man they needed to check his house for a water leak. while one of the suspects was upstairs, another entered the basement and broke into a locked

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is at the scene. crews working through the night to get this cleaned up. >> reporter: a lot of extra muscle on this, darlene. they're still working at this hour. now, that boil water advisory remains in effect for hoboken. give it a minute if you live in the area, even though the water pressure has been largely restored. but anyone coming through the area in their car is likely going to see the flashing lights

like the one behind me, all because the repairs from that water main break continue. a rough weekend for anyone living in the hoboken and newport area of jersey city as that 16-inch break happened there. most of hoboken was without water for several hours because the broken valve on a transmission line. residents have been advised to boil their water for at least a minute before consuming it. the county office of emergency management dispatched water tankers at several locations to give residents a chance to gather fresh drinking water. >> you never know until you go without it. things like coffee. you can't make coffee without water. you know, doing dishes, things such as that nature. watch washing things, washing your hands. >> reporter: several streets still closed as a result of this. we're talking about observer highway closed west of henderson to jersey avenue. harrison street is closed from paterson to newark. and jackson street is closed from paterson to newark as well.

the boil water advisory was canceled for jersey city, darlene. again, it remains in effect for hoboken. so that means anyone who plans on consuming drinking water in the hoboken area is being advised to boil it for at least a minute. no eta yet as to how long that boil water advisory will remain in effect. back to you. >> all right. in hoboken, tracie strahan. thank you. today lawyers are going to wrap up sheldon silver's federal corruption trial. they'll each deliver closing arguments, and the jury could get the case as soon as tomorrow. silver once commanded lots of power in albany. prosecutors say he used that influence to line his pockets with $4 million in kickbacks. on long island, police are searching for a serial robber. police say a gunman wearing a mask held up a pier 1 imports store in huntington station last night. they say he tied up the store's employees and customers before taking money from the register and safe. similar holdups have been reported in other starts in east

farmingdale, west babylon, and in deer park, all over the last three months. a homeless man helped federal agents recover weapons stolen from a massachusetts armory. the fbi says army reservist james walker morales broke into the armory in worcester last week swiping 16 military rifles and guns. three of the weapons were found on friday. police say a homeless man rummaging for bottles and cans near yankee stadium found a rifle and two handguns in a trash bag and turned them in. morales is in jail on long island awaiting extradition. all right. coming up on 5:34. time for weather and traffic on the 4s. chris, it could be a little warmer because i have to be outside playing in the cosmos media game today. my reverse bicycle kick is going to hurt if it's this cold. >> we have to get a camera crew there. >> we don't have to. >> i think you did that last year, too, didn't you?

"today in new york's" katherine creag is in the melrose section of the bronx. good morning. >> reporter: darlene, good morning. it seems the suspect is very selective about his victims. they are all women. they are all alone when they're robbed and attacked. the latest one happened here where we are, morris avenue, east 153rd street. the victims, some of them are in their 60s. there's one woman who is 72 years old. they've been attacked and robbed by this suspect. police released his mug shot hours ago. gilrael ruperto, 26 years old. according to police, he's violently attacked and robbed at least three women in recent weeks. the victims range in age from 64 to 72. in one instance, ruperto stole a 72-year-old woman's purse last

week. the victim also was sprayed in the face with some kind of liquid and thrown to the ground during the robbery. the suspect is about five feet tall, 125 pounds. darlene, we're learning he's familiar to police. he was arrested for a theft this time last year. back to you. >> katherine creag in the bronx. kat, thank you. divers are resuming the search for a missing canoeist in new jersey. they're going to be back in the water at white meadow lake in morris county today. police say two men were paddling on that lake when their canoe capsized early yesterday. one man made it to shore. the other disappeared. the search at this point is considered to be a recovery operation. in westchester county, the search continues for a small plane in a reservoir in north salem. that plane traveling from mississippi to danbury when it disappeared from radar last thursdays. crews did find the rear section

human remains ols report also reportedly discovered. in new jersey, hundreds of religious books and several sacred scrolls were laid to rest after a devastating fire at an historic synagogue. the damaged prayer books, bibles, and torah scrolls were placed in ceramic pots and buried in the congregation's cemetery, as required by jewish law. they were destroyed in the massive fire that gutted the 92-year-old synagogue in new brunswick last month. only one to be rafs rah was saved from the flames. it's an impressive achievement from gabby giffords. plus a good samaritan shot trying to protect a stranger. what happens next is almost unbelievable. and it is a chilly start to the week. we're going to rebound. weather and traffic on the 4s coming up as we look at the belt parkway by jfk.

getting in here. a few of the clouds may cut across our northwestern suburbs but that's it. tonight, a cold one. 32 in the city. 20s in the nearby suburbs. tomorrow, back to a mostly sunny sky, a little lighter wind. still cold for this time of year. here's your travel weather. wednesday through thanksgiving, even into friday, it's a dry, mild pattern in the east. gets stormy across the planes, particularly the southern plains. in terms of travel, whether it's air or road, excellent conditions. upper midwest, delays are likely because of stormy weather. out to the west, a storm system moving into the pacific northwest with rain and mountain snow. there will be times of poor travel there. it will be cooler but dry over the southwest. in the meantime, 50 for us on wednesday with sunshine. that's the big travel day here locally. and thanksgiving day, not bad. sunshine, high clouds, 60 degrees. can't complain about that. nice for the parade. you don't have to worry about bundling up for that either. 63 friday for the shoppers.

54 with showers saturday. back to chillier weather but sunshine on sunday. almost 5:47. lauren, how's the commute on a monday morning? >> seeing problems out there. they've been out there for quite a while. we'll head to western new jersey, where we have this accident on 78 eastbound in between exits 12 and 13. delays are getting very heavy through there. if you can get to the service road, that would be your best option to get around this. then heading over to union on route 22 westbound, all lanes still shut down by michigan avenue because of an accident with a downed pole in the roadway. hopefully that'll get cleared up soon. it's been out there for quite a while. we'll take a live look outside at the kew gardens interchange. you can see things are all moving along just fine out there. no delays, no construction getting in your way for a change, which is nice. alternate side of the street parking rules in effect up on the 4s. the long island teenager who went on that tirade over mac and cheese will be heading to court today. he's set to be arraigned on a breach of peace and trespassing

charge. he was caught on camera attacking uconn food service workers after they refused to serve him bacon mac and cheese. he did later post an apology online. princeton university's president is now responding to students who want former u.s. president woodrow wilson's name removed from campus. the students want wilson's name removed because of his views on segregation. in an e-mail to students, the university president says wilson's record on race is disturbing and that a committee will examine his legacy. justice department lawyers will now investigate a disputed police shooting in minneapolis. they'll also decide whether to release video of jamar clark's death. the group black lives matter posted one clip online sunday. it shows clark dead in handcuffs with an officer nearby, gun drawn. witnesses say jamar clark was already restrained when the officer shot him. right now police in new orleans are investigating a mass shooting at a playground. several hundred people were at a park in the ninth ward. they were recording a music

video last night when two groups began shooting at each other. in all, 16 people were hit. we don't know yet just how serious those injuries are. we're getting a look at the man accused of shooting a tulane medical school student who tried to save a woman in trouble. the video shows peter gold stepping in to save a woman being dragged down the street. police say the gunman shot gold in the stomach and tried to shoot him in the head more than once, but the gun jammed. gold is recovering. the shooter is on the run. former congresswoman gabby giffords tweeted goal achieved after he took part in this weekend's charity bike ride in tucson, arizona. she did it on a special bike because giffords remains partially paralyzed five years after she was critically wounded. she rode 11 miles in last year's event. this year she completed all 40 miles of the event. quite the achievement. in news for your health

today, a new study says adhd drugs may make it harder for kids to sleep. past research has suggested adhd medications may improve sleep by cutting down on bad bedtime behavior, but scientists at the university of nebraska found children who took the drugs had trouble falling and staying asleep. experts recommend adjusting the timing of doses and encourage nightly bedtime routines. for teenagers, when spoke moking it out of sight, it could also be out of mind. we're talking about those huge cigarette displays behind many of the counters at convenience stores. the rand corporation tried an experiment. they took away what's sometimes referred to as power walls of cigarette and said they found teens were 11% less likely to ask for a pack. so literally, if you don't see it, you might not ask for it. >> then it doesn't become a big deal because they know they shouldn't be doing it. all right. 5:50. just ahead, taking aim at a hidden fee. who's accused of taking drivers

long island this morning. as you go away from the city, which is down to 35, it's 28 in newburgh, 27 in poughkeepsie. bridgewater now below freezing. monticello, you're in the upper 20s. with a breeze, it adds a little extra sting to those chilly numbers. at least it will be a bright and sunny day, but it doesn't warm up. forecasting a high of only 43 degrees. it's 6:00 a.m. let's see how the monday morning commute is rolling along so far. lauren? >> things are still rolling along nicely for the most part. we have the same problems out there that have been out there since about 4:30 this morning. we have this accident on 78 eastbound between exits 12 and 13 in the left lane. delays continue to build. head over to the service road if you can to avoid that. heading over to union, route 22 westbound still shut down just after michigan avenue because of an accident with a downed pole. they're still in the process of clearing that. we will have more weather and traffic ahead on the 4s. >> lauren, thank you. it is 6:00 a.m. right now the impact of a major water main break is still being feld felt in hoboken.

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is in hoboken with an update on the repair work. quite a mess. >> reporter: the mop job is still necessary here on paterson avenue and observer highway, where we have moved to. we didn't have to go far, really, to find all of the water that remains from that break, even though pressure has been restored. now, beefed up patrol of about 20 hoboken officers will be guiding cars around destours cause -- detours caused by the water main break. water pressure has been restored, but you can see why many areas experienced issues over the weekend. officials are stemming us that a 16-inch water main break that brings water to both hoboken and the newport area of jersey city. the boil water advisories were put into effect. one does remain in hoboken this morning. it dealt a major blow to local businesses who also dealt with

flooding. >> water was almost up to the restaurant. football is crazy, so we missed out on a huge brunch this morning, which is devastating. >> reporter: well, to show you now the areas still shut down as a result of that water main break. observer highway is shut down west of henderson to newark. let's send you up now chopper 4 once again to show you all the water that's still everywhere, except for where it should be. again, that boil water advise ory remains in effect for hoboken. you can see over my shoulder that water remains in the street. everyone, darlene, is being advised to come in through the north end of hoboken to avoid all of the detours that are sure to cause a hiccup in the morning commute. back to you. >> all right, tracie strahan. thank you. right now police are searching for a robber targeting seniors in the bronx. we want to show you the newest picture of the man they're looking for. police believe they actually

know his name. 26-year-old gilrael ruperto robbed three women according to police, all in their 60s and 70s. in of the attacks, they say he sprayed liquid in the victims' faces and stole their purses. katherine creag will have a live report coming up in a half hour. police say a homeless man stumbled upon a stash of stolen military weapons in a trash bag at yankee stadium and turned them in. they were traced to army reservist james walker morales. the fbi says he broke into the armory in worcester, mass, last week and swiped 16 military rifles and other weapons. only three of them have been found so far. morales is in jail right now on long island, and he's awaiting extradition. today, closing arguments are scheduled in former new york state assembly speaker sheldon silver's federal corruption trial. that will happen in a manhattan courtroom. it's expected to take most of the day. silver once wealed lots of power

in albany, but prosecutors say he took nearly $4 million in kickbacks. the jury should get the case tomorrow. governor cuomo wants to dramatically increase the production of renewable energy in new york state by the year 2030. he wants at least half of the state's power to come from solar, wind, and hydroelectric generators. today's "times" reports the governor will call on the state public service commission to mandate that requirement. cuomo says it's part of his goal to reduce carbon emissions. it's 6:04 right now. time for weather and traffic on the 4s on this monday morning. we're complaining because it's feeling a little chilly, chris. >> imagine that on the end of november. we've been spoiled. that's for sure. we're in the mid-30s in the city. a lot of the suburbs at the freezing mark or below. it's a nice clear morning. chilly breeze around all day. lots of sunshine. that's with us all day too. temperatures only recover back to the low and mid-40s at best. most of the day with the breeze it'll feel more like the 30s. in the city right now, 35.

transportation is suspended indefinitely. there were 19 raids yesterday and overnight in molenbeek. there were 16 people arrested. the city locked down, on high alert. there are also about 1,000 additional troops and security personnel that are patrolling not only in the city but across the country. they're hunting for at least one suspected extremist. this guy. this is salah abdeslam. he's been on the run since the paris attacks on the 13th. now, in paris, french president francois hollande and british prime minister david cameron met. cameron requesting parliamentary approval to join the u.s.-led air strikes in syria against isis. >> and later this week, i will set out in parliament a comprehensive strategy for tackling isil. i firmly support the action that president hollande has taken to strike isil in syria. and it's my firm conviction that britain should do so too.

at 63. showers saturday. that's about the only unsettled day. back to chilly weather on sunday. let's get back to lauren scala. any new issues on the commute? >> there are a few. it's getting busier on the roads. the map is changing colors here. we're going to head to the taconic, where southbound just after miller hill road there's a disabled vehicle there. then a little further south on the taconic in hawthorne, the on-ramp is closed by route 9a and route 100. another spot to keep in mind. heading over to the van wyck expressway, an accident out there southbound by the belt parkway. heading over to new jersey, we've had these problems for a while now. route 22 shut down westbound by michigan avenue. a downed pole there from an earlier accident. then heading over to 78 in the union township area, 78 eastbound out before exit 13 there's an accident in the left lane. head to the service road to get around this. delays are a little bit less heavy there. so very heavy on this roadway. alternate side of the street

parking rules from in effect. >> lauren, thank you very much. 6:17 now. this morning, new orleans police say they know who shot a tulane medical school student who tried to save a woman in trouble. peter gold tried to stop the man dragging a woman down the street friday night. they say the gunman shot gold in the stomach and tried to shoot him in the head. the gun jammed though. gold right now is recovering. the shooter is on the run. also in new orleans, a music video shoot led to a gun battle that injured 16 people. about 500 people were at a park in the ninth ward to reported a music visited yoe deo last night when two groups began shooting at each other. 16 were taken to the hospital. mayor mitch landrieu says police are not ruling out gang involvement. a mistake on craigslist may just save a new jersey woman's life. here's what happened. one man was looking for construction materials but accidently ended up in the wrong section of the site.

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is on the ground in hoboken with an update on the repair work. tracie, where do they stand? >> reporter: well, michael, we really don't know because, as you see over my shoulder, we're still not out of the woods yet even though pressure has been restored. we're on observer highway near paterson avenue, just one of the places cars will have to try and get around as crews try to repair damage done by that water main break. chopper 4, as you mentioned, over the scene showing the streets still having issues this morning. it's the reason that hoboken's police department has beefed up their traffic enforcement by 20 officers today. according to suez, they're advising residents to boil their water in hoboken for at least a

minute. that's something that remains in effect this morning. this is a broken valve on a transmission line that affected water pressure in both hoboken and jersey city. now, it has been since repaired, but the office of emergency management in hudson county actually dispatched water tankers at some points to a handful of locations throughout the city to try and give residents fresh drinking water. >> you never know until you went without it. things like coffee. you can't make coffee without water. you know, doing dishes, things such as that nature. washing things, washing your hands. >> reporter: now, there are many detours as a result of this. harrison street is shut down from paterson to newark. and jackson street is closed from paterson to newark as well. again, that boil water advisory still in effect for hoboken. we just saw a woman actually wading through that water over

parking rules in effect today. >> thank you so much, lauren. right now police are asking for your help tracking down the man wanted for at least three attacks on older women in the bronx. "today in new york's" katherine creag is in the melrose section of the bronx with a picture police want you to see. kat? >> reporter: darlene, you said it. these are some vulnerable victims. they're women in their 60s. one of them is elderly and they're alone when attack and robbed. the latest attack happened where we are. there's the wanted poster of the suspect. he's 26 years old, gilrael ruperto. according to investigators, he's violently attacked and robbed at least three women in recent weeks. the victims range in age from 64 to 72. in one instance, ruperto stole a 72-year-old woman's purse last week. the victim was sprayed in the face with some kind of liquid and thrown to the ground during the robbery, according to investigators. the suspect is about 5 feet

tall, 125 pounds. news 4 investigates as learned the suspect has a criminal past. in fact, it was one year ago about this time he was arrested for another theft. back to you. >> katherine creag in the bronx. kat, thank you. police on long island are investigating the latest in a string of armed robberies. it happened last night at the pier 1 imports on jericho turnpike in huntington station. a gunman wearing a mask tied up the store's customers and employees, forced a worker to open the safe and cash register, then took off. police say there have been at least four similar robberies in suffolk since september. divers are resuming the search for a missing canoeist in new jersey. they'll be back in the water at white meadow lake in morris county later today. police say two men were paddling on the lake at 3:00 a.m. yesterday when their canoe capsized. one ma did make it to shore. the other disappeared. the search is now considered a recovery operation. and the search also continues for a small plane in westchester county.

crews found the back part of the plane and other debris in a reservoir in north salem this weekend. human remains were also reportedly discovered. the plane was heading to danbury when it apparently crashed last thursday. two people were believed to be on board. well, princeton university's president is now responding to students who want former u.s. president woodrow wilson's legacy wiped from the campus. students say they're disturbed by wilson's views on segregation segregation. in an e mags, the university president says, as a university, we have to be open to thoughtful re-examination of our own history. i believe it is appropriate to engage our community in careful exploration of this legacy. hundreds of religious books and several sacred scrolls were laid to rest in a solemn ce tremony in new jersey. the damaged prayer books, bibles, and torah scrolls were placed in ceramic pots and buried in the congregation ceremony as required by jewish law. they were destroyed in last

right now, the impact of a major water main break still being felt in hoboken. these are live pictures from chopper 4. chopper 4 is over jersey avenue and harrison street, where you can see water still in the streets a day later. >> quite a scene there. tracie strahan is on the ground. i know you're following the repair efforts. >> reporter: that's right. and water pressure has been restored for most of this area, but as you can see, crews still have a major issue on their hand when it comes to cleanup. all of this the result of a weekend water main break that affected not just hoboken but parts of jersey city as well. officials say a 16-inch water main broke. it brought water to both areas. boil watered advisory ies were put into effect. they remain here in hoboken. as a result of all the flooding, there are several streets that will be detoured. hoboken's police department actually beefed up their traffic patrols as a result.
